Infant Development & Early Intervention

Infant Development & Early Intervention 476 476 bh360

Our infant development and early intervention program helps babies and toddlers with developmental delays or disabilities learn key skills that typically develop very early in life. Early intervention can contribute to a child’s success at home, in school, the workplace, and community — and can make a positive impact on a child’s development and accomplishments well into adulthood.

Our infant development and early intervention professionals are specially trained in child development, and they work alongside occupational and physical therapists and speech-language pathologists. Our goal is to get each child “caught up” with their more “normally” developing peers, so they can get back on track with standard developmental milestones. Our specialists assess and address:

  • Cognition
  • Language
  • Fine and gross motor skills
  • Social and emotional development
  • Adaptive and self-help abilities

Our infant development and early intervention offers one-on-one sessions, with frequency based on need. Services are home-based or are provided in one of our behavioral health treatment centers. Speech, occupational, and/or physical therapy services are integrated into the program as appropriate or necessary.

Our social skills training help individuals function more effectively in social situations and cultivates skills needed to create positive interactions with others. Delivered at one of our behavioral health treatment centers, we offer age-based groups for kids, preteens, teens, and young adults. Our groups are conducted in a comfortable setting where individuals with developmental disabilities can develop and practice their social skills with peers on a regular basis.

Social skills training focuses on:

  • School readiness
  • Socialization in natural play/natural interaction/collaborative environments
  • Following group instructions
  • Appropriate social behaviors in a community setting
  • Assertiveness/anti-bullying strategies
occupational therapy

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy 476 476 bh360

Occupational therapy helps people develop and strengthen cognitive, physical, social, and motor skills. The goal of occupational therapy is to help improve everyday skills that foster the ability to become more independent and participate in a wide range of activities. Our occupational therapists evaluate the current level of ability, including how the individual:

  • Learns
  • Plays
  • Cares for himself/herself
  • Interacts with their environment

The evaluation also identifies obstacles that prevent the individual from participating in day-to-day activities. Based on the findings, the therapist creates customized goals and strategies that help each person work on key skills such as:

  • Independent dressing
  • Eating
  • Grooming
  • Using the bathroom
  • Fine motor skills like writing, coloring, and using scissors

Delivered in the home or in one of our behavioral health treatment centers, we offer half-hour and one-hour sessions, with frequency based on individual needs. Our program helps individuals gain the skills needed to navigate life more independently.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) / Behavioral Therapy – School Based

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) / Behavioral Therapy – School Based 476 476 bh360

Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA, refers to a variety of treatment options that are based on the principles of behavior analysis. ABA uses scientifically-based techniques for understanding and changing behavior, and is the most widely accepted approach to assess and intervene with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other developmental challenges or delays. This type of therapy is conducted one-on-one, is customized for each person, and is appropriate for individuals of all ages.

Our program is designed to increase language and communication, improve attention and focus, and decrease problem behaviors. We build on each person’s interests and strengths using structured and fluid opportunities to facilitate learning. During ABA therapy, skills that are useful in everyday life are broken down into easy-to-learn steps, with positive reinforcement and goal-focused treatment that meets the unique needs of each individual. At its core, ABA therapy helps individuals function more effectively in their natural environments.

Throughout the process, progress is measured to ensure the teaching approach is working. These routine assessments guide any adjustments or modifications to the personalized treatment plan that may be necessary or appropriate, and ensure continual progress toward goals.

Our school-based ABA services are delivered in the classroom. A school-based approach is beneficial because it provides the opportunity for the individual receiving therapy to participate in a normal school environment – often with their peers or siblings. Community immersion and integration is a major advantage of this type of program.
