Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy 476 476 bh360

Occupational therapy helps people develop and strengthen cognitive, physical, social, and motor skills. The goal of occupational therapy is to help improve everyday skills that foster the ability to become more independent and participate in a wide range of activities. Our occupational therapists evaluate the current level of ability, including how the individual:

  • Learns
  • Plays
  • Cares for himself/herself
  • Interacts with their environment

The evaluation also identifies obstacles that prevent the individual from participating in day-to-day activities. Based on the findings, the therapist creates customized goals and strategies that help each person work on key skills such as:

  • Independent dressing
  • Eating
  • Grooming
  • Using the bathroom
  • Fine motor skills like writing, coloring, and using scissors

Delivered in the home or in one of our behavioral health treatment centers, we offer half-hour and one-hour sessions, with frequency based on individual needs. Our program helps individuals gain the skills needed to navigate life more independently.

Speech Therapy

Speech Therapy 476 476 bh360

Speech therapy addresses an individual’s challenges with language and can help improve verbal, nonverbal, and social communication skills. Speech-related challenges vary from person to person. Some have trouble speaking, some love to talk but have difficulty holding a conversation, and some need help understanding body language and facial expressions. The goal of our speech therapy program is to address each person’s specific needs and help them communicate in useful and functional ways.

After an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) to assess communication strengths and difficulties, a personalized therapy plan is developed. Individual goals might include improving spoken language, learning nonverbal skills such as signs or gestures, or using an alternative communication method such as pictures or technology.

The specific therapy plan might focus on:

  • Strengthening the muscles in the mouth, jaw and neck
  • Making clearer speech sounds
  • Matching emotions with the correct facial expression
  • Understanding body language
  • Responding to questions
  • Matching a picture with its meaning
  • Using a speech app to produce the correct word
  • Modulating tone of voice

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) / Behavioral Therapy – School Based

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) / Behavioral Therapy – School Based 476 476 bh360

Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA, refers to a variety of treatment options that are based on the principals of behavior analysis. ABA uses scientifically-based techniques for understanding and changing behavior, and is the most widely accepted approach to assess and intervene with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other developmental challenges or delays. This type of therapy is conducted one-on-one, is customized for each person, and is appropriate for individuals of all ages.

Our program is designed to increase language and communication, improve attention and focus, and decrease problem behaviors. We build on each person’s interests and strengths using structured and fluid opportunities to facilitate learning. During ABA therapy, skills that are useful in everyday life are broken down into easy-to-learn steps, with positive reinforcement and goal-focused treatment that meets the unique needs of each individual. At its core, ABA therapy helps individuals function more effectively in their natural environments.

Throughout the process, progress is measured to ensure the teaching approach is working. These routine assessments guide any adjustments or modifications to the personalized treatment plan that may be necessary or appropriate, and ensure continual progress toward goals.

Our school-based ABA services are delivered in the classroom. A school-based approach is beneficial because it provides the opportunity for the individual receiving therapy to participate in a normal school environment – often with their peers or siblings. Community immersion and integration is a major advantage of this type of program.
